About this place
Gniew is what Malbork was before the crowds — a complete Teutonic stronghold you can walk through without jostling. The castle stands on a bluff above the confluence of the Wierzyca and the Vistula, so the view from the walls covers a dozen kilometres of the valley.
At weekends the courtyard hosts combat and craft displays. This is no photo backdrop — the re-enactment groups have worked here for years and gladly explain exactly what they are doing.
A visit takes about an hour and a half. Leave an extra half hour for a walk around the little town’s market square, which keeps its medieval layout.
Good to know
- Re-enactments run at weekends — on weekdays the castle is much quieter.
- The courtyard is cobbled and the walls are reached by steep stairs with no lift.
- Parking is at the foot of the hill; the walk up takes five minutes.
