About this place
Paniewo is the only two-chamber lock on the entire Augustów Canal — it overcomes a drop of more than six metres in two steps. The gates are still opened with a crank, exactly as in the 1830s.
The Augustów Forest surrounds the lock. The nearest village is several kilometres away, so in the evening you hear nothing but water and woodland.
Locking a kayak or boat through takes some fifteen minutes and is free. So is watching from the bank — this is one of those attractions that has no ticket office.
Good to know
- The lock operates in the navigation season; outside it the gates stay shut.
- The access road is unsurfaced and can get muddy after rain.
- There is no shop or food here — bring your own provisions.
