About this place

Bochnia began mining salt in 1248 — twenty years before Wieliczka. The tourist route descends to 212 metres and includes a boat crossing through a flooded chamber.

The Ważyn chamber at 250 metres is 255 metres long and serves as a sanatorium and sleeping hall. You can stay the night here, in a sleeping bag, under a ceiling of salt.

The mine draws far smaller crowds than Wieliczka. Midweek, groups can be just a few people.

Good to know

  • Underground it is 14–16°C all year, whatever the weather on the surface.
  • The descent is by mining shaft — worth considering if you are claustrophobic.
  • An overnight stay in the Ważyn chamber requires advance booking.
