About this place
Tarnica stands at 1,346 metres, the highest summit of the Polish Bieszczady. The walk up from Wołosate takes two hours and leads across the połoniny — treeless meadows stretching to the horizon.
The Bieszczady National Park is one of the darkest places in Poland. At night the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and the park holds International Dark Sky Reserve status.
On the summit stand a metal cross and a plaque with the elevation. On a clear day you can see the Tatras from here.
Good to know
- There is no shade or water on the meadows — two litres per person is the minimum.
- The weather changes fast; afternoon storms are typical in summer.
- Leaving the trail is forbidden — this is a strict protection zone.
