About this place
Raj has barely two hundred metres of accessible route, yet along that stretch it packs the densest dripstone cover in the country. In places the stalactites grow a dozen or more per square metre.
Research work uncovered traces of a Neanderthal camp from around fifty thousand years ago, together with flint tools and animal bones.
Entry is in groups every half hour and requires advance booking — daily visitor numbers are limited to protect the formations.
